A useful starting point
Self-esteem is not simply “confidence”. It is influenced by experience, relationships, comparison, expectations and the stories we repeatedly tell ourselves about who we are. A harsh internal voice can become so familiar that it starts to sound factual.
Things worth trying or noticing
- Notice the difference between a mistake and a verdict about your whole character.
- Pay attention to standards you would never apply to someone you care about.
- Reduce comparison when it reliably leaves you feeling smaller rather than informed.
- Collect evidence of competence, kindness, effort and progress, not only failures.
- Consider therapy or professional support when self-criticism is entrenched or linked to broader mental-health difficulties.
