Anxiety & stress

When your mind will not switch off.

Stress can be useful in short bursts, but exhausting when the alarm system stays on. Start here for practical ways to understand what may be happening.

A useful starting point

Anxiety can show up in thoughts, the body or both. Racing thoughts, tension, avoidance, irritability, poor sleep and physical sensations can all be part of a system that is trying very hard to protect you.

Things worth trying or noticing

  • Name the specific worry rather than treating the whole day as dangerous.
  • Reduce repeated checking or reassurance where it is feeding the cycle.
  • Use slow breathing, movement or grounding to help the body step down from high alert.
  • Keep routines around sleep, meals and caffeine predictable.
  • Consider professional support if anxiety is persistent, worsening or causing significant avoidance.
